Stop Trying to Become a Well Rounded Leader
For years, leadership development has focused on fixing weaknesses. Improve your communication, strengthen your delegation, become more strategic, learn to be more organized. You’ve heard them all. While there’s value in continuous improvement, this approach often creates frustrated leaders who spend most of their energy trying to become average at things that will never come naturally.
There’s another way. One of the ideas that has consistently reshaped leadership development is the understanding that people create their greatest value by developing their natural strengths, not by obsessing over every weakness. That doesn’t mean weaknesses should be ignored. They should be managed. But there is an important distinction between managing something that drains your energy and investing deeply in what naturally energizes you.
This is why strengths based leadership continues to resonate with so many organizations. When leaders understand how they naturally think, communicate, solve problems, and build relationships, they begin making decisions with greater confidence and authenticity.
Just as importantly, they stop expecting everyone else to lead exactly the way they do. A leader with strong Strategic talents will approach challenges differently than someone whose greatest strength is Relator or Harmony. Neither approach is inherently better. They’re simply different. The key is recognizing those differences and building teams that benefit from them rather than fighting against them.
The healthiest organizations aren’t filled with identical leaders. They’re filled with leaders who understand themselves well enough to appreciate what others bring to the table. If you’ve never taken time to understand your own strengths or explore how they shape your leadership, don’t view it as another assessment to complete.
View it as an opportunity to lead with greater intentionality. The goal isn’t to become someone else. The goal is to become the most effective version of the leader you’re already wired to be.
