Showing Grace and Understanding In Leadership

Showing Grace and Understanding In Leadership

September 13, 2023•3 min read

In today’s fast-paced world, leadership is more than just making tough decisions and driving results. It’s about fostering a culture of empathy, kindness, and understanding. Leading with grace means approaching leadership with a compassionate attitude, considering the needs and feelings of others while still achieving business objectives.

As leaders, showing grace and understanding is essential for building positive relationships in the workplace, fostering a supportive and collaborative work environment, and establishing and promoting teamwork that is effective.

“We need to understand the other side to impact the other side. We become much more effective as humans and leaders when we engage in hearty conversations with those who are different from us, not necessarily to change our opinions, but to build the empathy muscle.”

Daniel Lubetzky

Regardless of the situation, finding ways to put these action steps into place will set you up to showcase they grace and understanding needed for you to be a more effective leader.

  1. Practice Empathy. How often do you put yourself in the shoes of others? Instead of deciding that someone else in your workplace needs to show empathy, is it evident by all that you intentionally choose to show it? Take the time to understand other perspectives, feelings, and possible challenges.
  2. Become an active listener. Put the phone down. Make eye contact. Show with your body language and eyes that you are intentionally tuned in to the discussion you are having.
  3. Create an environment of open communication. Employees should feel they can address issues and share their feelings or frustrations without receiving pushback or a frustrated, emotional response. Your role as a leader is to handle situations calmly, because that is how you would want your employees to respond.
  4. Respect differences. While sometimes it is easy to believe we would enjoy a workplace better if everyone were more like us, the workplace needs the differences in order to grow.
  5. Acknowledge the efforts of others. When is the last time you sought an employee out to discuss their latest accomplishments?
  6. Lean into living a life of continuous growth. People want to drink from a roaring river, not a dried up stream. When others are around you, are they gaining leadership skills?

To lead with grace requires understanding and empathy towards others and inspiring and motivating people to work towards a common goal.

Quote graphic by James Ryan: to lead with grace is also to lead with courage

One of the most important aspects of any work place is the relationships. Finding ways to incorporate grace and understanding will set others up for success, because they will feel confident and comfortable in their place of work.

And remember, giving grace as a leader not only benefits others but also enhances your own professional growth and happiness. By embracing positivity, empathy, flexibility, clear communication, celebration, acceptance of criticism, and leading by example, you can create a work environment that thrives on grace and respect.

Great leaders never stop growing and learning.

Professional coaching is one great resource to utilize for both developed leaders as well as new leaders.

I want to see you succeed as a leader! Through my professional coaching, I help you succeed, which in turn helps your company and those around you succeed as well. It can be isolating sometimes as a leader. You are asked to make big decisions. Through coaching, I give leaders a place to talk through the stresses they feel every day with someone who has dealt with the same struggles.
