Expanding Your Skillset As A Leader

December 29, 2022•2 min read

Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a young professional, no matter what industry you find yourself in, you possess some sort of skill set.

From soft skills to hard skills there are a variety of skills that can be learned. When you spend time assessing the current skills you have and the ones you would like to have is a great way to analyze your professional career and how to expand on it.

A skillset is considered to be a group of skills and abilities that you possess. As expected, everyone’s skillset is different and that is what sets individuals apart. The more skills you have the more competent you will be within your career. Within skill sets, there are two types of skills. They are hard skills and soft skills. Hard skills can include event planning, accounting, mathematics, computer programming. These skills are learned skills through education or hands-on experience. Soft skills are skills that come naturally to individuals. These can include effective communication, leadership, or motivation.

So now you know what skill sets include, what next?

It can be beneficial to determine what your strengths are. One way to do this is through asking for feedback about your strengths and weaknesses. Once you know your strengths, you can work on those and improve the skills that make up your strengths. You can also tap into outside assesments, such as Gallup’s CliftonStrenghts Assesment.

To take an even bigger step, when you know the skills you want to develop more, you can attend workshops or classes that allow that skill to develop further. Webinars are also a great way to learn more about a specific skill that doesn’t require any type of travel. Again, with soft skills, it can be beneficial to know what skills you want to work on before approaching them. Improving soft skills can be a bit more challenging than hard skills. You will have to be incredibly self-disciplined. For example, if you are trying to work on time management, writing out deadlines for yourself can be important and a tool you can use to make sure you are making the deadline and not at the last minute.

Another tip for developing new skills is to adopt a mentor or tap into a leadership coach that can help keep you disciplined.
